Orientation - Meet Your Classmates

Hello! Welcome to my GIS Blog!

My name is Daniela. I was born in Honduras, but have made Florida my home for 20 years. I graduated with a BA in English from The Florida State University 4 years ago. After a rough start as a college grad, I stumbled upon GIS and immediately knew this was the career I was meant to do for the rest of my life. Currently, I am a full-time employee working as a GIS Technician at Osceola County Government in Kissimmee, FL. Previously, I worked as a GIS Data Specialist at a non-profit organization in Orlando, FL called Community Coordinated Care for Children, Inc. (4C).

I have only been in the GIS field for 3 years and am completely self-taught. I am pursuing a Graduate GIS Certificate (and later on UWF Master's degree in GIS) to be better respected in my field, to apply newer technologies, and grow professionally.

Although I only have a few years of experience, my eagerness and passion has helped me accomplish great tasks. While at 4C, I transformed raw child care data into geographical insights for important decision makings, such as million dollar funding contracts. Also, I created an interactive mapping application using ESRI's Web AppBuilder for ArcGIS for child care provider searching — a service the organization always dreamed of deploying to better serve the community. And currently at Osceola County, I maintain large geographic data warehouses and create maps for multiple departments such as Traffic Engineering, Urban Planning, Mosquito Control, Water Resources, Park Trails, and more. I work very closely with staff to find solutions and provide analysis from a spatial perspective. Most recently, I implemented Data Drive Pages to a large mapping out-put project, and was able to cut labor time by 93.7%.

GIS is so dynamic, there is still a ton more to learn, which is why I am so excited to be in this program. Some adjectives that I think describe me are: determined, ambitious, positive, assiduous, creative, and passionate.

Overall, I love geography, technology, innovation, and good people with a great, can-do attitude who want to make things happen. Thank you for stopping by and reading a little bit about me.
