Module 6 - Crime Analysis & Crime Hotspot Mapping

This week we examined the use of GIS in crime analysis, specifically mapping areas with high-crime-densities (also known as "hotspots"). Crime hotspot mapping is widely used by police departments and law enforcement agencies to determine the different types of crimes being committed, to understand and discover patterns of crime, and to predict crime -- allowing them to find the best way to plan and respond to crime, and thus prevent and lessen victimization.

Crime hotspot mapping can be detected using many various techniques. Generally speaking, these techniques can be broken down into a few categories: whether they measure clusters at a global or local scale, and whether they are descriptive or employ some form of statistical testing. As you can see from my final map deliverable above, in our lab assignment we utilized Kernel Density, Local Moran's I, and Grid-based methods to create crime hotspots of burglaries that occurred in 2007 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
